Overview

Over time the skin on the upper eyelids will begin to loosen. The lower lids will become puffy. This creates an appearance of tiredness or aging. This is not due to how you feel but due to the structure of the eyelids. Eyelid surgery addresses the structural issue.

The results are subtle. Most patients notice that people say they look refreshed or rested, but cannot explain why. This is the desired result.

Is it right for you?

You may be a good candidate if the following describe you:

  • You have hooding or excess skin on your upper eyelids.
  • You have bags or puffiness under your eyes.
  • Excess upper lid skin may interfere with your field of vision.
  • You are in good general health and do not smoke.

How the procedure works

Upper lid surgery removes excess skin and, if needed, a small amount of fat. These procedures are done through an incision in the natural crease of the eyelid. Lower lid surgery addresses bags and is also performed through small, discreet incisions.

Eyelid surgery can be performed in conjunction with a facelift, brow lift or nonsurgical treatments for a refreshed, balanced appearance.

Recovery

First few daysIce can be used to reduce swelling and bruising around the eyes.
1 weekSutures are typically removed and most patients can return to work.
2 weeksBruising will subside and makeup can typically be used.
Common questions

Eyelid Surgery questions

Answers to questions patients ask most about this procedure.
Can eyelid surgery improve my vision?
If excess upper lid skin is interfering with your field of vision, removing this tissue may help. In some cases this portion can be considered functional. Coverage rules vary by insurer.
Will the scars show?
Incisions are placed in the natural crease of the eyelids and on discreet areas so that scars tend to be well hidden after healing.
