Overview

Loose and hanging skin on the upper arms is common after significant weight loss or during the aging process and often does not improve with exercise alone. An arm lift removes excess skin and fat to create a firmer and more toned upper arm.

The procedure can make a significant difference in how clothing fits and in comfort during activity.

Is it right for you?

You may be a good candidate if the following describe you:

  • You have loose, hanging skin on your upper arms.
  • You have lost a significant amount of weight and the skin has not retracted.
  • You are at a stable weight.
  • You are in good general health and do not smoke.

How the procedure works

Excess fat and skin are removed and the remaining skin is tightened. The incision is typically placed along the inner arm where it is least noticeable and may also be combined with liposuction for additional contouring.

The length of the incision depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed which is discussed during your consultation.

Recovery

First few daysSwelling is reduced by keeping the arms raised. Discomfort is managed with medication.
1–2 weeksDesk work and light activity typically resume.
6 weeksFull upper-body activity returns as cleared.
Common questions

Arm Lift questions

Answers to questions patients ask most about this procedure.
Will the scar be visible?
The incision is made on the inner arm to keep it as subtle as possible. Scars will fade over time. The tradeoff for improved contour is discussed during your consultation.
Can liposuction alone fix my arms?
If fat is the primary concern and the skin is in good condition, liposuction alone may be appropriate. If loose skin is a concern, an arm lift will usually be required to remove it.
