Overview

Implant revision updates the results of a previous breast augmentation. There are many reasons for revision. These include changes in size preference, aging of implants, changes in implant position over time or correction of a complication such as capsular contracture.

Revision is highly individualized. The approach depends on your existing implants, your tissue, and what you would like to change.

Is it right for you?

You may be a good candidate if the following describe you:

  • You have existing implants and would like a different size or shape.
  • Your implants have shifted, hardened or you suspect a leak.
  • You want to update a result from years ago.
  • You are in good general health.

How the procedure works

Dr. Whitlock will review your history and examine your current results in order to determine the best approach. This may include exchanging implants, adjusting the implant pocket, addressing scar tissue or combining revision with a lift.

Because each revision is unique, imaging or additional evaluation may be recommended prior to surgery.

Recovery

First few daysComparable to the original augmentation. Managed with medication.
1–2 weeksMost patients return to desk work and light activity.
6 weeksFull activity returns as cleared.
Common questions

Breast Implant Revision questions

Answers to questions patients ask most about this procedure.
Can you remove and replace implants in one surgery?
In most cases, yes. Removal and replacement, with or without a lift, can usually be done in a single surgery. The specifics depend on your exam.
What is capsular contracture?
Hardening of the scar tissue that naturally forms around an implant may affect the feel and shape of the implants. This can be addressed during revision. Dr. Whitlock will explain your options.
